How much should I consume right after your workout?
Women should aim to about 10 to 20 grams post workout within the hour of finishing their workout. Men on the other hand need about 30 to 40 grams of protein post workout and should be within a half hour. The good news is you can choose different ways to have your protein. Why is it so important to have you protein within recommended times?
Some sports medicine basics: When you workout, especially for strength training you get microscopic tears in your muscle. Amino acids in protein help build and repair the muscle. In turn, the protein we eat releases those amino acid to repair the damages from the tears created. In turn, also growing your muscle and preparing them for the next workout.
What happens to muscle without protein intake in post workout?
In theory, not having the protein your body needs in a post workout will inhibit their growth because they won’t have the necessary nutrients to successfully repair. This will lead to inflammation and even an increased chance of injury. Many injuries that happen are actually from not having the proper amount of protein (aka amino acids from protein) to support your tendons, muscles and reduce inflammation.
